Ingenio San Antonio achieves Bonsucro Certification

Ingenio San Antonio becomes first sugar mill in Nicaragua to be certified by BONSUCRO

We are pleased to communicate that Ingenio San Antonio, owned by Nicaragua Sugar Estates Limited, has become the first sugar mill in Nicaragua to have its operations certified by BONSUCRO, an industry leading, global non-profit, multi-stakeholder organization that fosters sustainability of the sugarcane sector through its leading metric-based certification scheme and its support for continuous improvement for members.

With this certification, Ingenio San Antonio joins the ranks of other best-practice companies in the world such as The Coca Cola Company, PepsiCo, Nestle, Unilever, Cargill, The World Wildlife Fund and General Mills, among others.

The certification was issued after Ingenio San Antonio successfully demonstrated that its operations are compliant with the requirements of BONSUCRO’s Production Standard and Chain of Custody Standard.

The Production Standard relates to measureable standards in key environmental and social impacts of sugarcane production and primary processing while recognizing the need for economic viability. Meanwhile, the Chain of Custody Standard contains a set of technical and administrative requirements for verifying the sustainable production of sugarcane and all sugarcane derived products throughout the entire supply chain after the mill and its cane supply.

The BONSUCRO certification, considered a “gold-standard” within the sugar industry, demonstrates Ingenio San Antonio’s commitment to excellence and to implementing world-class practices in its operations. This certification, issued on November 9th 2016 and valid for a three-year period thereafter, is the latest in a list of other quality control, environmental, health and occupational safety certifications maintained by the company. These include:

  • Quality Management: ISO9001: 2008
  • Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point: HACCP
  • Food Safety System Certification: FSSC22000
  • Jewish Food Safety Management System: KOSHER
  • Sustainability Management System: ISCC
